Apple files application for 'iWatch' trademark in Japan

Apple files application to register 'iWatch' trademark in Japan

Evidence is mounting that Apple might out a smartwatch in the near future after Yahoo Japan noticed that the company applied for the "iWatch" trademark in Japan on June 3rd. Our Japanese editor noticed that several other companies have applied for that term as well, though this one (released on June 27th) is from Apple Inc. of Cupertino. That follows a patent application from Apple we saw earlier in the year for a watch-like AMOLED device that proposed a slap bracelet, kinetic energy charger and "end-detection" user sensor, among other features. In addition, other rumors from Bloomberg back in February suggested that 100 Apple employees were working on a smartwatch of some kind. If we don't see a device after all that, Cupertino's gone to a heck of a lot of trouble for nothing -- check after the break for a screen grab (in Japanese) of the trademark application.

Helping Child Succeed Martial Arts Sports - Kids Karate

Supporting their children in a martial arts class

Being there to support your children is half the battle to their achieving success in martial arts.

What can parents do to ensure their children succeed in martial arts or other sports? Mostly, it is about just being there for them and supporting them.

I wrote this guest post a few years back. It received many responses, but sadly the host site no longer exists. I decided to re-write it on my own blog. I wrote this article from a unique perspective?that of the child?s. Our kids karate classes in Sydney are popular because the sensei get right ?down in the dirt? with the children and actively participate, not just bark out orders. This gives us a different viewpoint. From my many years experience in working with kids, I offer this advice that will help the parent support their child in the martial arts or any other sport.

?Be there whenever you can to watch me. It means so much to me and I will try extra hard when you are there?.

?Be there to support me, especially on grading day. Every other parent is cheering for their child, but I am sad because there is no one here to cheer for me?.

?Observe me quietly during my karate class with a smile on your face and always give me positive feedback when we get home, this shows me that you care.?.

?It makes me happy that you volunteer when the sensei asks for parent helpers, I love seeing you take part in my class?.

?Please pick me up from practice on time. All of the other kids have gotten their hugs and are gone and I am still here waiting for you. I feel abandoned and will cry?.

?When you blabber loudly on your mobile phone and make the Sensei ask you to take it outside, it really embarrasses me?.

?Help me with my belt if it falls off, the sensei is very busy and does not have the time?.

?You told the sensei I am not any good at Karate. I thought he was proud of me. That really hurts?.

?You have your face buried in the newspaper and have not watched one of my kicks today?.

    At Home

?Don?t push us too hard. Practising five days a week is a bit much for our little bodies and it will soon become a job?.

?Ask us what lessons we learned in karate today. It shows you care?.

?Practice with me at home or at least watch me practice?.

?Please sew up my karate pants so I don?t trip and fall down in front of the whole class?.

?Please don?t compare me to other children. I am not as big, strong, and coordinated as Grant/Julie. It is not my fault?.

?You sometimes get angry when I don?t win the game or match. The sensei says that what counts most is not winning, but having fun and doing your best?.

?Do tell me you are proud of my efforts in karate. I live for it?.

?Let us be kids and have a bit of fun. We only get to do it once?.

How do you support your children in the martial arts or other sports? Your comments are appreciated.

Recognising Karmic Relationships | Cauldrons and Cupcakes

?When someone has a strong intuitive connection, Buddhism suggests that it?s because of karma, some past connection.?
    ~?Richard Gere

    ?

Karmic relationships are a big part of our growth. We can experience a karmic relationship with lovers, siblings, children, parents or friends, even work colleagues.

Contrary to popular opinion, not all karmic relationships are soul mate relationships. ?Rather, karmic relationships happen because before we came to this life we have made a conscious choice to come together with another soul so that we can share, support, learn, heal, resolve past life issues, forgive and grow.

There are several defining characteristics of karmic relationships, but the most obvious ones are:

    • instant recognition of each other on some level, especially when there is no way you have ever met before
    • strong, and often unexplainable attraction (the sort we can?t justify to ourselves, let alone family or friends)
    • an intensity to the relationship, either positive or negative
    • a tendency for the relationship to become for a time, the most dominant or perhaps even our ONLY relationship
    • a deep emotional or physical connection, often that has an addictive quality
    • an ability to really press each other?s buttons
    • an inability to easily walk away
    • a feeling of the need to stay, even if it is hard, so that you can work through or resolve something

Usually karmic relationships serve to bring you together for a definite purpose, and once that purpose is achieved, the ?spell? is broken and the relationship loses its pull. Looking back you might wonder what ever brought you together ? even you won?t understand it!

Many of my clients have experienced intense friendships or love relationships that taught them hard lessons, that changed them in some way, and that caused them to move in a new direction. ?Often these relationships were painful, uncomfortable and a wild ride. ?None of their friends or family understood why they were in that relationship, and it often made little sense to my clients either, but they couldn?t seem to help it or avoid the pull of the other person.

A large number of them then went on to find a lifelong partner, or a satisfying new life direction?

Not all relationships are difficult ? some are wonderful, but last only a short time. ?They buoy us up and remind us of something positive and important about ourselves, building a stronger sense of self and purpose.

Some karmic relationships will support you for your entire life, and if one person dies before the other the one who remains will not find someone to replace that love, and that feeling of deep connection will endure even if that person takes a new partner. ?Note ? this relationship may not be with a lover, but could also be with a friend or family member.

These enduring karmic relationships are characterised by:

    • the feeling that you understand in each in ways other people can?t
    • a feeling of loyalty and a deep bond
    • a sense of being very comfortable with the other person, as if you?ve known them forever, even if you?ve just met
    • a knowledge that you are sharing a path through life
    • a feeling of deep trust, and a knowledge that you are supported by this person
    • an easiness with one another, even if you do have issues to work through
    • an ability to truly forgive, and to move on, together

We are all connected, often in ways we can?t possibly understand from where we are, down here. I find it incredibly reassuring, to know that love transcends time and space, and that we care enough about each other as souls to show up in each others lives over and over again.

    Beagle-boxer-basset wins World's Ugliest Dog

PETALUMA, Calif. (AP) ? A huge-headed, duck-footed mix of beagle, boxer and basset hound was the upset winner Friday at the 25th annual World's Ugliest Dog Contest.

Walle (WAHL-ee), a 4-year-old mutt from Chico, Calif., who was entered at the last minute, was judged most unsightly of 30 dogs at the Northern California competition.

"This dog looked like he's been photo-shopped with pieces from various dogs and maybe a few other animals," judge Brian Sobel said.

Walle overcame the dominance in recent years by nearly hairless Chihuahuas, Chinese cresteds, or combinations of the two.

Owner Tammie Barbee got the dog when he was three months old.

"People come up to me and say that dog is not right," Barbee said, "but I love him."

Judges said they were especially impressed by Walle's bizarre waddle of a walk.

Walle wins $1,500 and will make several network TV appearances next week, including NBC's "Today" show and ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live."

The contest at the Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds gets worldwide attention, with media from around the world traveling to Petaluma, about 40 miles north of San Francisco.

Organizers say the dogs are judged for their "natural ugliness in both pedigree and mutt classes."

Brazil's president pledges to hold dialogue with protesters

By Brian Winter and Jeferson Ribeiro

SAO PAULO/BRASILIA (Reuters) - Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff promised on Friday to hold a dialogue with members of a protest movement sweeping the country, but also said she would do whatever is necessary to maintain order in the wake of widespread vandalism and looting.

"We cannot live with this violence that shames Brazil," she said in a nationally televised address. "All institutions and public security forces should prevent, within the limits of the law, every form of violence and vandalism."

Rousseff spoke even as new demonstrations broke out on Friday, including one that for several hours blocked most passengers from entering or leaving the country's busiest international airport, outside Sao Paulo.

The protests have come out of seemingly nowhere over the past week. More than 1 million people took to the streets on Thursday in the biggest demonstrations in Brazil in 20 years.

The nameless, leaderless movement - composed largely of students and the middle class - has pulled together a wide range of grievances including bad public transport and healthcare, corruption, and the billions of dollars that the government is spending to host next year's World Cup.

Rousseff, a former guerrilla who herself protested a military rule during the 1960s, praised the peaceful majority of protesters and said she would listen to their demands.

Speaking calmly but firmly, she said Brazil has a "historic opportunity" to harness the energy from the protests and make improvements. But she warned the movement could be ruined by violence like that seen on Thursday, when protesters smashed buildings, looted stores and set fires in a dozen cities.

Rousseff said it was her "obligation to listen to the voice of the streets, as well as dialogue with all segments" of society peacefully protesting.

The president, who is not known for initiating talks, did not specify what such a process would look like.

After her speech, the hashtag #calabocadilma - "Shut up, Dilma" in Portuguese began trending on Twitter accompanied by withering comments attacking her government.

Friday's protests were much smaller than those on Thursday. There were signs of a backlash against the movement on Friday, and one prominent leftist group said it would stop organizing marches for now because of discord and violence.

Unlike other recent protest movements such as the Arab Spring, Brazil's demonstrators are not targeting individual politician and Rousseff remains relatively popular.

Many are part of the middle class, which benefited from a recent economic boom. But they are upset about paying European-level taxes for what some describe as African-level public services.

Rousseff made a specific appeal for calm during a warm-up event underway for the World Cup. Clashes between protesters and police have occurred outside stadiums, terrifying many fans and tourists.

    OPTIONS LIMITED

A recent economic slowdown and rising inflation has crimped the government's budget, meaning it probably cannot offer a major public investment plan without making painful spending cuts elsewhere - unlikely with an election looming next year.

Rousseff in her speech cited plans such as setting aside future oil royalties for education and importing doctors from abroad. She has previously made these proposals and they have faced resistance in Congress and elsewhere.

Mayors of several cities tried to yield to one of the protesters' main demands this week by rolling back a recent hike in bus and subway fares, but the demonstrations only grew.

The festive atmosphere that had attracted many students and even their parents to demonstrations over the past week took a big and possibly lasting hit on Thursday night.

TV images showed masked youths looting stores, setting fires and defacing buildings including the foreign ministry in Brasilia, which had its windows smashed. The violence was widespread, occurring in at least a dozen cities, and appeared to be fueled by fringe movements and common criminals taking advantage of the disorder.

Two people died as a result of the protests, local media reported, including one death caused by a car plowing into a crowd. More than 60 were injured in Rio de Janeiro alone.

    BACKLASH

Radio, TV, Twitter and other social media crackled on Friday with condemnations of the violence, while the unity that had prevailed among protesters at the heart of the movement also showed signs of breaking down.

The Free Fare Movement in Sao Paulo, an activist group that was instrumental in the rise of the protests, said it would stop organizing new demonstrations for now after street fights broke out among protesters with different objectives on Thursday.

Douglas Belome, a bank teller and member of the Free Fare group, said things turned ugly when some protesters sought to prevent left-wing political parties from waving their flags.

"At least for now, there are no new demonstrations scheduled," he told Reuters, expressing regret for the violence.

World soccer body FIFA on Friday condemned the recent violence but said it had not considered cancelling either the warmup tournament, known as the Confederations Cup, or the big event next year.

Italy coach Cesare Prandelli told reporters that his team was banned from leaving the hotel because of the unrest.

Polls have shown that a large majority of Brazilians support the protesters and their aims. But the demonstrators' primary tactic of blocking main roads has begun to wear on some people.

"I support these (protests), but I think it's out of control," said Nilson Chabat, a 31-year-old gas station attendant on his way to work on Friday in Sao Paulo. "Many of us are angry but you can't just go make a mess every day."

Investing for income: Get ready for volatility - Retirement Weekly ...

    By Robert Powell, MarketWatch

When it comes to the current market environment, Michael Livian, CFA of Livian & Co., says there are at two things for retirees to consider: volatility and inflation risks.

Volatility (across asset classes) is likely to increase. Margin debt levels have grown to pre-2007 levels, suggesting that any move in the markets is going to be exacerbated by leverage. Retirees should learn to tell between true risk and volatility. They should have a sound investment plan and ignore the noise. Easy to say?not so much to do.

The main risk that retirees are facing is inflation risk. There are no signs of inflation yet. However, as the aggregate private sector credit metrics advance, so should the velocity of money. In the next decade you may see a pickup in inflation rates along with employment and credit expansion. Given that, retirees should:

Obama says FBI nominee Comey will balance privacy, security

    By Steve Holland

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In nominating Jim Comey to be the next FBI director on Friday, President Barack Obama said the former Justice Department official will help strike a balance between the need for information on terrorist plots and respecting Americans' privacy.

The need for such balance has been brought to the fore recently with the disclosure that the U.S. government has conducted vast surveillance of Americans' phone and internet data in its search for foreign terrorism plots.

Obama used the example of a tumultuous episode from Comey's past to promote the Republican. Comey had famously refused to certify the legal aspects of National Security Agency domestic surveillance during a 2004 stint as acting attorney general while then-Attorney General John Ashcroft was hospitalized with pancreatitis.

The refusal prompted two senior White House officials - counsel Alberto Gonzales and chief of staff Andrew Card - to try to persuade Ashcroft to sign the certification. Comey, who was in the room, said Ashcroft refused.

"He was prepared to give up a job he loved rather than be part of something he felt was fundamentally wrong," Obama said in a Rose Garden ceremony to announce Comey's nomination to replace FBI Director Robert Mueller.

"Jim understands that in time of crisis, we aren't judged solely by how many plots we disrupt or how many criminals we bring to justice - we're also judged by our commitment to the Constitution that we've sworn to defend," he said.

The surveillance program resurfaced as a major bone of contention this month after disclosures about it by former government contractor Edward Snowden.

Obama said he was confident that Comey "will be a leader who understands how to keep America safe and stay true to our founding ideals, no matter what the future may bring."

Comey, 52, served as deputy U.S. attorney general for President George W. Bush. He had previously been the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York.

If confirmed by the Senate, he would replace FBI Director Robert Mueller, who has held the position for 12 years.

The Washington, D.C.-based Federal Bureau of Investigation serves as both a federal criminal investigative agency and a domestic intelligence body.

Samsung user manual confirms Galaxy S 4 with Snapdragon 800 chip

Welcome to Samsung Day, 2013. While we wait on some big (and little) product launches this afternoon, here's a quick bite to keep us going: an interesting processor spec mentioned in the user manual for the SHV-E330S, which we think will be the new LTE-Advanced variant of the Galaxy S 4 intended for South Korea. How the folks at RBmen spotted it we have no idea, but one of the pages (shown after the break) confirms the presence of a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 (MSM8974), which not only supports the new double-speed LTE standard but is also something of a beast when it comes to general performance. This isn't especially relevant to a Western audience, perhaps, except that it marginally increases the probability that we'll see this same powerhouse inside the rumored Galaxy Note III, since Samsung evidently feels comfortable with Qualcomm's flagship silicon -- and it can't have failed to notice that LG's engineers are fond of it too.

Bug exposes contacts of some on Facebook

Facebook says a bug in its system caused 6 million users' contact information to be inadvertently exposed.

The social media company said Friday that a bug led to users' contact information, such as email addresses or phone numbers, to be accessed by other users who either had some contact information about that person or some connection to them.

Facebook said in a blog post that the cause of the bug is "pretty technical" but that the problem is tied to its "Download Your Information" tool.

The company uses the information that users upload to better tailor the friend suggestions it issues. The bug caused some of this information to be inadvertently stored in association with a person's contact information as part of their Facebook account.

As a result, if someone downloaded an archive of their Facebook account through the "Download Your Information" tool, they may have been provided with additional addresses or telephone numbers for their contacts or people with whom they have some connection. Because the contact information was provided by other people on Facebook, it was not necessarily accurate.

Facebook said it has fixed the problem and is in the process of notifying affected users via email.

The affected accounts represent only a fraction of the over 1 billion users on the social media site.

Facebook, which is headquartered in Menlo Park, Calif., said that it has no evidence that the bug has been used maliciously and it has not received complaints.

Best time to drive a hybrid? When traffic is bad.

Hybrid cars can cost thousands of dollars more than their traditional counterparts, but in cities racked with congestion, they can easily save nearly that much in gas, a Carnegie Mellon University study found.

    By Antony Ingram,?Guest blogger / June 19, 2013

The Toyota Prius C hybrid is displayed on the final press preview day for the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Mich., in 2012. The steep cost of a hybrid can be most effectively made up by drivers who spend at least 90 percent of their time on city roads, a study says.

But if you have little choice but to sit in that traffic on your way to work, a new study shows you'd be best off with a hybrid vehicle.

You probably didn't need a study to tell you that, of course--a look at the EPA window sticker of any hybrid vehicle will quickly show off its strengths.

The study, conducted by Carnegie Mellon University (via the Pittsburg Business Times), does put numbers on the hybrid car's benefits, showing you just how much better such a car is when faced with a congested commute.

Hybrids aren't bad on the highway either, but there the benefits are much smaller given the cars' extra cost over conventional vehicles.

"Hybrid and plug-in vehicles cost more without much benefit to the environment," said CMU's professor of mechanical engineering and policy, Jeremy Michalek, in a statement.

While some hybrid vehicles do offer impressive highway figures--cars like the Toyota Prius remain right at the top of the EPA's highway mileage lists--the gap to regular vehicles is much smaller than it is in city driving.

    Hybrid versus non-hybrid

To offer some perspective, take a car like the 2013 Chevrolet Cruze Eco.

Its 42 mpg highway rating is only 6 mpg below that of the 2013 Toyota Prius--a 12.5 percent drop, while costing $4,000 less to buy. Yet look to city mileage, and the margin is much greater--the Cruze Eco's 28 mpg is a 23 mpg, or 45 percent drop.

Effectively, the Prius driver is going twice as far on every gallon in the city, rather than just a few miles further on the highway. At 12,000 miles per year, with gas at $3.66 per gallon (current average on the EPA's fueleconomy.gov site) and a 90 percent city commute, the Prius would make up $3,000 of that price $4K difference in gas alone.

It's an extreme example (though doesn't take into account an inevitable rise in gas prices), but illustrates the chasm between hybrids and regular vehicles in the city. A plug-in hybrid would save even more.

CMU's data suggests that overall, choosing a hybrid vehicle for use in congested cities could reduce lifetime costs by 20 percent and cut greenhouse gas emissions in half.

The study warns against another factor too: Aggressive driving. That can cut a vehicle's range by 40 percent or more, says the study. That does apply to any vehicle though, and will certainly have an effect on battery electric vehicles where every mile counts.

CMU's study was funded by the National Science Foundation, along with Ford and Toyota.

We'd normally advise a pinch of salt when carmakers with a vested interest get involved, but the study's results are simply common sense. As ever, how you drive, what you drive and where you drive all have an influence on just how green your journey is. Buy a vehicle that suits your needs, and remember:

    Your. Mileage. May. Vary.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Buy anything on the Internet lately without paying sales tax? In all but a few states, you're probably a tax cheat.

That's right, even if Internet retailers don't collect sales tax at the time of purchase, you're required by law to pay it in 45 states and the District of Columbia.

Here's the problem for states: hardly anyone pays the tax, and there's not much states can do about it.

The Senate is expected to pass a bill Monday making it easier for states to collect sales taxes for online purchases. Some of the nation's largest retailers are rejoicing. But small-business owners who make their living selling products on the Internet worry they will be swamped by new requirements from faraway states.

"It's a huge burden for a company like ours," said Sarah Davis, co-owner of Fashionphile.com, a California-based company that sells high-end pre-owned handbags and purses. "We don't have an accounting department, we've got my father-in-law."

Davis started the company in 1999 and now runs it with her brother-in-law. They have 26 workers and three stores, in Beverly Hills, San Diego and San Francisco. Last year, Fashionphile.com did $10 million in sales, the vast majority of it online, Davis said.

Fashionphile.com sells bags directly from its website and on eBay. The company collects sales taxes from customers who live in California, but not from people who live in other states, Davis said. Under the law, states can only require stores to collect sales taxes if the store has a physical presence in the state.

That means big retailers, such as Wal-Mart, Best Buy and Target, with stores all over the country collect sales taxes when they sell goods over the Internet. But eBay, Amazon and other online retailers don't have to collect sales taxes, except in states where they have offices or distribution centers.

As a result, many online sales are essentially tax-free, giving Internet retailers an advantage over brick-and-mortar stores.

But the purchases aren't really tax free under the law.

In states with sales taxes, if you buy something from an out-of-state retailer and don't pay taxes, you are supposed to pay those taxes when you file your state tax return, said Neal Osten, director the Washington office of the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Only Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no sales tax. Alaska has no state sales tax but does have local ones.

Unpaid sales taxes are usually referred to as "use taxes" on state income tax returns. Use taxes apply to purchases made over Internet, from catalogs, television and radio ads and purchases made directly from out-of-state companies. State officials, however, complain that few people pay these taxes, Olsten said.

"I do know about three people that comply with that," says Sen. Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., the main sponsor of the Senate bill.

Enzi's bill would empower states to require businesses to collect taxes for products they sell on the Internet, in catalogs and through radio and TV ads. Under the bill, the sales taxes would be sent to the states where a shopper lives.

Businesses with less than $1 million a year in out-of-state sales would be exempt.

The Senate is expected to pass Enzi's bill Monday. Already, the measure has survived three procedural votes. President Barack Obama supports it, but the bill faces an uncertain fate in the House where some Republicans consider it a tax increase.

Supporters say the bill is about fairness for local businesses that already collect sales taxes, and lost revenue for states. Many governors, both Republicans and Democrats, have lobbied the federal government for years for the authority to collect sales taxes from online sales.

The issue is getting bigger for states as more people make purchases online. Last year, Internet sales in the U.S. totaled $226 billion, nearly 16 percent more than the previous year, according to Commerce Department estimates.

States lost a total of $23 billion last year because they couldn't collect taxes on out-of-state sales, according to a study by three business professors at the University of Tennessee. About $11.4 billion was lost from Internet sales; the rest came from purchases made through catalogs, mail orders and telephone orders, the study said.

The study was done for the National Conference of State Legislatures.

"This is a sales and use tax which is on the books," said Michael Kercheval, president and CEO of the International Council of Shopping Centers. "This isn't a tax issue. It's a tax collection issue."

Kercheval's group is part of a broad coalition of retailers that supports Enzi's bill, including Internet giant Amazon, which says it wants a uniform national policy for collecting taxes on Internet sales.

Supporters say the bill makes it relatively easy for Internet retailers to comply. States must provide free computer software to help retailers calculate sales taxes, based on where shoppers live. States also must establish a single entity to receive Internet sales tax revenue, so retailers don't have to send them to individual counties or cities.

"The same software that allows people to figure out shipping costs by ZIP code can figure out what the taxes are," Kercheval said.

Opponents say the bill doesn't do enough to protect small businesses. EBay wants to exempt businesses with less than $10 million in sales or fewer than 50 employees.

"Complying and living under the tax laws of 50 states is a major undertaking because the process of complying with tax law goes far beyond just filling out the right forms," said Brian Bieron, eBay's senior director of global public policy. "You have to deal with the fact that all of these government agencies can audit you and can question you and can actually take you into court and sue you if they think you are doing something wrong."

Davis, the co-owner of Fashionphile.com, said even with free computer software, her business doesn't have the manpower to separate sales taxes for each state and meet each state's deadline to send in the money.

"We collect and pay sales tax here in California and we're happy to do that. We receive benefit from that. We can influence lawmakers locally on how those taxes are spent and how much those are and how they're collected," Davis said.

"I don't feel the same about Indiana."

ECB meets amid rate cut expectations

(AP) ? The European Central Bank's governing council is meeting Thursday amid expectations it will cut its key interest rate to stimulate the lagging economy in the 17 countries that use the euro.

The council will announce its rate decision after its meeting in Bratislava, Slovaki ? one of its two meetings per year that are held outside Frankfurt. Mario Draghi, ECB president, will hold a press conference after the announcement.

Many investors expect the ECB to cut its key interest rate from 0.75 percent, which is already a record low.

In theory, a cut would help companies by lowering borrowing costs. Economists say this cut may not have much direct effect since banks are not always passing on lower rates to customers in indebted countries, where the help is needed most.

video crash cams - Traffic Infractions - FindLaw Answers

SO its ok for the officer to neglect finishing his investigation to show others this video.

    ?

How do you know that the officer didn?t finish the investigation? And even if he did, how do you know that showing the video to the bystander was the cause of that failure to investigate? Of course the officer should do his job and complete the investigation unless some other higher priority matter came up to call him away from the accident scene. If he didn?t od his job, that?s an issue for his superiors to deal with. The law doesn?t guarantee your son any particular sort of investigation of the accident.

    ?

Obviously you are irritated over this for some reason. But like it or not, showing the video to someone else is not likely to be a violation of the law here. What harm was really done by that??

    ?

If you want, you can contact the officer?s commander and complain about it. But apart from doing that, I think you ought to just let this go and move on. You won't get anywhere dwelling on what I think most people would see as not a very big deal.

How to find the best third party iPhone, iPad, and iPod repair company

How to find the best third party iPhone, iPad, and iPod repair company

Whether your AppleCare is expired or you opted not to extend it, out of warranty replacements through Apple can be expensive. If you aren't comfortable performing a DIY repair on your own, that may leave you looking for a repair company that's either local to you or accepts mail-ins that can perform the repair for you.

In the past few years, many repair companies have cropped up all over the world that specialize in iPhone, iPad, and iPod repair. Unfortunately, not all of them use quality parts and/or know exactly what they're doing. Here are some things to keep in mind when choosing a third party iPhone, iPad, and iPod repair company.

    Research them online

This is somewhat common sense but it's absolutely the first thing you should do. If they aren't listed on Yelp! or Google Businesses, it may not be a good sign. Check for an official website, Facebook, or Twitter page and see what other people are saying about them. If you can't find an online presence, we'd recommend looking for another option. Any credible repair company should be more than forthcoming with their customers and gladly accept their feedback in a public forum where potential customers can find it.

Finding quality information about a company online is extremely important when you're looking at mailing in a device. Walk-ins allow you to gauge your level of comfort on a face to face basis but mail-ins take that factor away. If you're thinking about mailing your device off to a company, you should communicate with them on the phone or at the very least, via email, before doing so. If you can't find a contact phone number and/or physical address, find another service. There are many reputable companies out there that will talk to you.

    Inquire about pricing

Pricing is a deciding factor for many when they're debating whether they should get a device fixed or use an upgrade, if available. A reputable repair shop should be open about their pricing. A good sign is if they actually list it online on their website or Facebook page.

When it comes to paying for a repair, prices will vary given where you live and your local market but the going rates should be pretty consistent across the board. For instance, iPhone 4/4S repairs typically range between $80 to $115 for a screen replacement depending on your location. This should include labor and parts.

    Cheaper isn't always better!

We're talking about your iPhone, iPad, or iPod here. While it's always nice to snag a good deal on something, a repair isn't something we recommend compromising on. If someone is offering to perform a screen replacement or other repair that sounds too good to be true, it probably is. We have seen repair shops crop up that offer screen replacements for the iPhone 4/4S for as low as $40 to $50. This is a huge red flag that they're probably not using authentic or high quality parts. Knock-off and counterfeit parts on eBay and Amazon are cheaper for a reason, they have an extremely high defect rate. It's also less likely that the repair company is going to warranty or stand behind their work.

That leads us to our next topic...

    Part quality

Don't ever be afraid to ask a repair company what kind of parts they use or where they come from. While you can find high quality parts from eBay and Amazon for a higher price tag, it's not normally a route that a reputable repair company would take.

Suppliers like eTech Parts offer repair companies great deals depending on how much they order in a given month. The more they order, the higher of a discount they'll get on their wholesaler account. Amazon and eBay sellers typically won't do this nor is either site set up for this. Any reputable repair company should be more concerned with providing a quality service over saving a few bucks per screen or component cable.

I am very open with customers that ask about where we acquire our parts and even give them links to some of our supplier sites if they ask. Not all repair companies will do this but some may and that may help set your mind at ease. If they won't tell you where they get their parts, at least make sure they warranty them for a reasonable amount of time.

    Warranty

A very obvious question that you should always be asking is whether or not a repair company warranties their work. Any good one should absolutely be warrantying not only parts but defects in workmanship. I've found that 90 days is pretty typical across the board with some companies warrantying work a little longer. They should also be able to answer specifics on what exactly is covered under the warranty.

This typically comes into alignment with how a supplier will warranty parts for that company. For example, eTech Parts will warranty all the parts I buy for 90 days, so I pass that 90 days on to the customer. If they have a problem, we correct the issue and then deal with the part supplier on our own time.

For example, we typically warranty the repair they have performed and that particular part but if they come in with another issue, we'll always check and make sure another issue didn't arise from an error on our part. This requires a great level of trust between you and your customer.

Around here, we have a we break it, we bought it policy. If we break a device during the course of repair, we replace it with a brand new one. No, not a refurbished or repaired device we have laying around, a brand new in box device directly from Apple or another big box retailer, with an Apple warranty. If that device isn't sold anymore, they get an upgrade to the closest model. In three years, we have only had to use that policy once, but it shows that we stand behind our work and are honest with our customers.

It sucks to tell a customer you made a mistake, but everyone does, and it's how we learn. And let's face it, accidents happen. It just can't be at the expense of a customer and a repair company has to be willing to own up to their end of the deal.

So don't be afraid to ask what happens if they break your device during a repair. It can happen and a reputable repair company should have an answer that you're willing to accept.

    Repair time frame

This is probably the biggest concern of any person that walks through our door and the question we hear most often:

How long will I be without my iPhone?

Any reputable repair company should be forthcoming about how long they'll have your device and give you a receipt for it when you drop it off. While repair times may vary from company to company, most knowledgeable companies can do almost any iPhone repair while you wait unless it involves heavy diagnostics. For example, a smashed iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S screen should take no longer than an hour from start to finish, meaning you can most likely wait for it. Just keep in mind that if there are people ahead of you, it can increase the wait time. For common repairs on iPhones, don't expect to leave your iPhone for more than a few hours. If they're telling you days, walk way.

Other repairs that require more diagnostics such as liquid damage could take longer and are harder to estimate exact time frames. This will typically depend on the repair company and how many technicians they have at their disposal. We typically know within 1-3 days whether or not we can fix a device but that number may vary given the extent of the damage. If a hold up is caused by special ordering parts, that should be something the repair company communicates with you. We always try and keep in contact with our customers to let them know the status of their device as often as we can.

Smashed screens on other devices such as an iPad or iPod touch can vary greatly. Newer iPads can be more challenging but common repairs should still be able to be done same day or with a 24 hour turnaround time. Same thing for iPods. If you think a turnaround time estimate doesn't sound right, don't be afraid to ask why or call around to other places, even if they aren't in your area, and ask them what they estimate.

    The bottom line

There are lots of repair companies out there who do exceptional work and treat iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch repairs as an art form. They love what they do and are genuinely good at it. Many of them may even service other kinds of devices such as Android and BlackBerry. Unfortunately, this is an industry that for every one reputable company that stands behind their work, you'll find three guys on the corner using sketchy parts off eBay to make a quick buck. It's something quality repair companies have been fighting since the beginning and still continue to fight today.

If you do your homework and voice your concerns to a prospective repair company, you'll know within seconds whether or not you trust them. If you don't, walk away and look for another option.
