That's according to Google SVP of Commerce and Local, Jeff Huber, who took to the search giant's social portal to announce the milestone. Dubai Film Festival's Best Arab Film Goes to Haifaa al Mansour's ...

Abdulla Aljunaibi?and Humaid Alawadi's The Path walked away with this year's Muhr Emirati prize, one of the top awards dished out at the close of the Dubai International Film Festival Sunday evening (Dec. 16).

In the Muhr Emirati section, Muna Al Ali was awarded the special jury prize while The Goat's Head (Raas Al Ghanam), directed by Juma Al Sahli secured the best film award at the festival's closing ceremony and prize giving.

The festival, which dishes out more than $600,000 in prize money to filmmakers from the Arab region and beyond, marking it out as one of the world's most extravagant prize-giving events, also handed out its Muhr Arab feature category prizes.

Alexandra Kahwagi?got a special mention for her role in Round Trip, a Syria, UAE, Germany, France and Egypt co-production in the Arab feature category.

The best actress plaudit went to Waad Mohammed for her turn in Wadjda, the German, Saudi Arabian and United Arab Emirates backed movie directed by Saudi Arabia?s first female film director, Haifaa al Mansour.

Mansour's film also secured the best Muhr Arab feature crown.

The evening's Arab feature best actor nod went to Amr Waked for his role in the Egyptian feature Winter of Discontent (El Sheita Elli Fat) while Kamal El Mahouti won best director for My Brother (Mon Frere), a French Moroccan backed picture.

The curtain came down Sunday Dec. 16 on the ninth edition of Dubai's festival, with organizers claiming a 30 percent uptick in industry attendance and 400 hours of programming showcased in over 1,323 screenings.

158 films unspooled during the event, which opened with Oscar winner Ang Lee's Life of Pi.

Organizers also noted that this year booked 370 professional meetings as part of Dubai Film Connection, with 55 individual banners repped, compared to 270 last year.

The ninth Dubai International Film Festival, held under the patronage of UAE vice president and ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, screened films from 60 countries across 43 languages.

DIFF chairman Abdulhamid Juma?said, "In the past eight days we have not only screened 158 films but offered networking platforms to over 1,700 industry professionals, showcased 330 films in our Filmmart (60 percent increase versus 200 last year), hosted 24 forums and workshop for the filmmakers of the future, awarded thousands of dollars to worthy filmmakers and welcomed a host of international and regional talent to Dubai."

Juma, thanking Al Maktoum's patronage and the event's numerous sponsors, said he thought the Muhr Awards "capped off a stellar ninth season and this success really sets the stage for the amazing program we will have in store for the festival's monumental 10th edition in 2013."

Earlier, DIFF honored industry stalwarts Mahmoud Abdel Aziz, the veteran Egyptian actor, and renowned British director Michael Apted, with lifetime achievement awards.

As one of the most lucrative filmmaker competitions in the world, the Muhr Awards were established in 2006 to honor filmmakers from the Arab world, and were expanded to include the AsiaAfrica competition in 2007.

This year 83 films competed for the $600,000 plus prize purse.

DIFF artistic director Masoud Amralla Al Ali said: "The field this year was incredibly strong, and our juries had a very difficult time selecting the finalists. We at DIFF are proud to announce this year's winners and look forward to following their illustrious careers for years to come.?

Congo's president calls on country to mobilize

KINSHASA, Congo (AP) ? Congo's president called on the country's citizens to mobilize against aggression after the capture and retreat of strategic territories by rebels.

Find and restore lost files with the Mac Data Recovery tool ...

The ability to recover lost information is something that is becoming more important every day as we become increasingly reliant on technology and computers to manage everything from photos and music to our business documents and drafts of the next great American novel. Stellar Phoenix has developed its data recovery solution, Mac Data Recovery, as an easy-to-use tool for Mac users.

When the application starts, the main screen, shown in Figure A has three options:

  • Recover Data
  • Create Image
  • Resume Recovery

Recover data

The large blue button for recovering data opens a selection of things to choose from when performing a recovery. The following types of recovery are available, each with specific options displayed for the type of recovery being performed:

  • Drive Recovery - allows recovery of corrupt volumes
  • Photo Recovery - allows recovery of photos, music, and video content
  • CD/DVD Recovery - allows recovery of optical media
  • iPod Recovery - allows recovery of data stored on an iPod
  • Raw Recovery - allows advanced recovery, useful when other methods do not work

Selecting Drive Recovery provides the following options for recovering a volume:

  • Quick Recovery - scans the entire selected drive for lost data, shown in figure B
  • Deleted item recovery - scans for items that have been deleted from the selected volume
  • Formatted Media/Lost File Recovery - recovers items that have been lost due to a media format
  • Search Lost/Deleted Volumes - selecting this option searches for lost or deleted volumes

Running a quick scan

Selecting the photo recovery option will allow you to select a volume and scan for photos, music, and video files. Once the scan completes, select the files or folders to recover and click the Recover button, shown in Figure C.

In addition to recovering information from a computer, you can also use Mac Data Recovery to recover data from an iPod. To do so, connect the iPod and select iPod Recovery. Once the connected iPod is scanned, data can be recovered from the device by selecting the found files and choosing recover.

Create image

To improve recovery speed, you can select the Create Image option from the main screen. This will create an image of the selected drive to be used for later file recoveries by creating a snapshot of the volume at the time the process is run. Having a snapshot of your data will allow that data to be scanned and used for recovery, rather than needing to scan the in-use copy of your computer.

When selecting Create An Image, you will choose a volume and provide a name for the dmg image created.

Resume recovery

Because recovery of information can take some time, Mac Data Recovery will prompt to save scan data when a running scan is stopped prematurely. If you have saved scan information, selecting Resume Recovery will allow you to select a saved previous scan and pick up the recovery where you left off.

Application options

Options are available to modify the file formats that are included in a scan type. Many are included by default; however unchecking a file format will exclude it. Using the headers section of options, file formats can be added to the existing list.

Filtering searched items can be accomplished from the Filters tab of the Options dialog. This will allow you to create sets of file types, which can be included or excluded from a particular scan.

On the other options tab you can configure general settings for the application, including:

  • Check for updates
  • Show messages before displaying large files
  • Hide Partitions less than or equal to a certain size
  • Show previews of photos/text files found during scanning

In testing this Mac Data Recovery, I have found it very easy to use and straightforward. The configuration was very user friendly and did not require too much research to figure out. There is a free trial that will allow files available for recovery to be viewed, but will not support recovery.

Licensing comes in two flavors, basic for $99, which includes email support and live chat support, and premium for $119, which includes basic support as well as phone support, remote desktop assistance, and expert product advice.

Photographer snaps stunning Northern Lights pics

National Geographic photographer Mike Theiss has always wanted to see the northern lights. So when an assignment took him to Whitehorse, in Canada's Yukon Territory, he rented a car and drove more than 550 miles (885 kilometers) north to the Arctic Circle.

While it usually takes a major solar storm to send the northern lights dancing over the lower parts of Canada and the northern United States, auroras can sometimes be seen in the Arctic Circle even when not visible elsewhere. ?And sure enough, they made an appearance for Theiss.

He spotted them and stopped to take pictures a short drive from his hotel, at a lonely truck stop off the Dempster Highway, a route that follows on old dogsled trail and connects the Yukon cities of Dawson City and Inuvik. "In the winter, nobody really goes, and it's quite dangerous because it's so cold," he told OurAmazingPlanet.

Since it was so frigid ? with temperatures around minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 40 degrees Celsius) ? he had to keep his car running during the four hours he was photographing, both to keep warm and to ensure he didn't have to start it again. His normally trusty camera batteries had to be changed and heated to keep functioning.

But the northern lights made it worth it. "I was yelling and screaming when it happened," he said. "All of the sudden, a stripe of color shoots up off the horizon, and goes all the way over my head, from one side to another. There was no way to capture it all," he said. "What happens is, it does dance; the lights twist and come rolling at you. I swear to God it looks so low that you can touch it," Theiss said.

He also got a mild case of frostbite from just touching his metal tripod without a glove. "Maybe it's because I'm from Florida, but I didn't know that could happen," he said. The focus ring on his Canon 1D Mark IV camera also froze, so he couldn't focus properly.

Luckily, most of the pictures of the northern lights turned out. "I'm really happy I got the photos I did, but it wasn't easy," he said.
