Relationships in learning: for support, for challenge, for friendship ...

Whilst driving yesterday, i was thinking about the nature of relationships. Some of the people in the car i knew well, one i had never met before. With those people who i knew, there was a dialogue based on understanding and shared experience, none of which we could draw on with the new member of the group. There?s no doubt about it that familiarity changes the nature of communication.

I?m working on a research project at the moment to quantify how relationships formed in the real world differ from those forged in the virtual one. I think it?s hugely significant for organisations as they start to include increasing volumes of social learning within their methodology: when do we get people together, how and why? Is there a true value in face to face? Are virtual relationships different or stronger? What are the issues of integrity, trust and collaboration?

Part of understanding these dynamics is to understand what it is that we look for in communities of learning, either in the real world, the virtual or combined. Support? Challenge? Friendship? Probably all three and possibly more. We come together in adversity as well as for collaboration.

We know that people engage in spaces that are relevant, but that?s not why we enter friendships. Whilst there may be a practical element that we want friends so that we don?t have a BBQ alone, we also practically draw upon their guidance, advice and expertise, to help fit a kitchen or to advise on that uncomfortable rash. Or maybe that?s something that goes beyond friendship, but it?s certainly something that you?d draw on a different relationship about: that with your doctor.

Medical relationships are a great example of how the real and virtual differ. People are far more comfortable disclosing embarrassing personal information in the virtual world than the real one!

Understanding the dynamics of relationships and how they support and challenge learning is complicated, but that doesn?t meant that we shouldn?t try. Too often we just focus on the historic relationship between ?teacher? and ?student?, but in an increasingly social world of learning, we need to broaden our viewpoint right back at the instructional design stage. We need to incorporate our understanding of how relationships are formed and what purposes they serve, both in the formal worlds of the office, the informal worlds of our social lives and the grey space where both collide.

9 Affordable Computer Enhancements Under $50 | REALTOR.com ...

9 Affordable Computer Enhancements Under $50: Tecca Tuesday Tech Update photoquestionsRealtor.com is working with Tecca.com, to bring you the latest information on technology for the home. Join us here every Tuesday for wisdom directly from the Tecca team:

Adding a little more pep to your computer setup doesn?t have to be expensive. There are many surprisingly affordable upgrades that will breathe new life into your older machine, make sitting in front of it more comfortable, or even help improve its life span.

9 Affordable Computer Enhancements Under $50: Tecca Tuesday Tech Update photo1. Jog your computer?s memory with a RAM upgrade.
RAM (random access memory) is the super-fast storage that your computer uses for temporary files. If you?ve noticed your computer slowing down when you have several programs or browser tabs open, you may benefit from a RAM upgrade. Consult your owner?s manual or hit a local computer repair shop for help determining which type of RAM your computer needs and how much it?s capable of using.

2. Connect more devices with a USB hub.
When you?ve connected several peripherals ? mice, keyboards, printers, and more ? it?s easy to run out of USB ports on your computer. If you?re in need of more ports to connect more devices, consider picking up a USB hub. These plug into a single USB port on your computer (and in some cases, an electrical outlet as well, to provide enough power for several devices), allowing you to connect even more gadgets to your PC. Think of it as adding a power strip for input, output, and information!

3. Upgrade your mouse.
Many people underestimate just how nice an ergonomic mouse is. If you spend any real amount of time in front of the computer, you may want to invest in a more comfortable mouse. Logitech, Microsoft, and many other companies offer great wired and wireless options under $50. Stop in to your local computer electronics retailer to test drive a few models first-hand.

9 Affordable Computer Enhancements Under $50: Tecca Tuesday Tech Update photo4. Make typing a breeze with a new keyboard.
If your keyboard has letters rubbed off or a few sticky keys, it might be time for an upgrade. Much like a mouse, a keyboard is an often underappreciated piece of technology, and there are lots of options that provide more functionality than the standard 104-key model that came with your computer. Many offer backlit keys and ergonomic designs, not to mention wireless or bluetooth connectivity. Some even offer additional media buttons to easily adjust your volume or control your music library.

5. Help your computer breathe better.
There are lots of sensitive components inside of your computer, and absolutely none of them like overheating. Every so often, it?s a good idea to give your computer?s cooling bits a hand and blow out all of the dust (and pet hair) that collects inside. The easiest way to do this is a cheap can of compressed air. Blowing out your computer two or three times a year can also help improve its lifespan, saving you money in the long run. If your computer?s intake fans have filters or mesh over them, take this opportunity to wipe them clean, too, so that air can flow unimpeded to cool off those toasty chips inside. If you have a cooling fan that?s starting to fail, replacements are usually less than $10.

9 Affordable Computer Enhancements Under $50: Tecca Tuesday Tech Update photo6. Make sharing files a snap.
If you need to copy large files between computers, there?s no better way than with a USB thumb drive. These tiny storage devices can hold anywhere from 1GB to 64GB of information, making transferring even the largest of files a snap.

7. Boost your USB speeds.
If speed is what you need for your USB devices, a USB 3.0 expansion card may be a good option. Installing your new card is fairly simple, but it may be a daunting task to the less technically inclined. We suggest bringing it to your local computer repair shop if you don?t feel comfortable rooting around inside of your computer. Laptop users, beware ? expansion cards can only be installed in desktop computers. Remember, in order to take full advantage of your new card?s performance, any USB devices that you plug into it must also be USB 3.0-compatible; slower USB 1.1 or USB 2.0 devices will work, but only at their lower top speeds.

8. Give your mouse hand a break.
Picking up a new mouse pad is an affordable way to make your computing experience more comfortable. A new pad will make moving your mouse around easier and take some strain off your wrist. Some pads even come with a built-in gel wrist rest for added ergonomic support.

9. Feed your computer clean power.
The best way to keep your computer running smooth for years to come is to feed it clean power. A surge protector with an uninterruptible power supply offers both additional outlets, protection from lighting strikes, and a cleaner electrical signal for your computer and other components. Your computer constantly draws power from the UPS?s internal battery, while the UPS constantly recharges the battery from the wall outlet. In the event of a brownout or power failure, your computer can run for several minutes on battery power, giving you enough time to save all of your documents and shut down the computer safely.

I have many allergies to plants. Should I avoid ... - Health and Fitness

Question by Red: I have many allergies to plants. Should I avoid herbal remedies just to be safe?
I have allergies to various plants that come and go with no warning. I know that, since I am allergic to daisies, I shouldn?t use echinacea (not sure if I spelled that right ? extract of purple coneflower, anyway) and ought to be careful with chamomile. When I was a child, my mother tried to ?cure? my hayfever by having me eat honey, and I almost died, so I?m more than a little worried about having another allergic reaction to herbal suppliments or natural treatments for illness, etc. However, I have some health problems that ?traditional? medicine doesn?t offer an effective treatment for, and I?d like to at least explore some other options. Should I stay away from herbal remedies and look for something else?

(I?d really appreciate it if replies are NOT someone just trying to sell me something. I?m looking for answers, not advertisments.)

if you?re allergic to so many things, then before you decide to take ANYTHING other than what a doctor prescribes you, go talk to your doctor about it to make sure there?s nothing in it to cause you a reaction.

Yoga Guru

A yoga teacher guidance is must for anyone who takes up yoga. You can be that person

A yoga teacher educates their students about the mind-body-spirit connection; and teaches them to relax and stretch so that they can do yoga poses which help them to lead a healthier and more balanced lifestyle; physically, mentally and spiritually.

Qualifications: There are several yoga institutes in India and other countries, such as the Ashtanga Institute at Mysore, Parmarth Niketan at Rishikesh, Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram at Chennai, Bihar School of Yoga at Munger, Sivananda Vedanta Centre at Trivandram, and the Yoga Institute at Santacruz in Mumbai. Specialised courses for Iyengar Yoga, Bikram Yoga, Power Yoga etc. are also available at various locations.

Job Description: Yoga is the ancient Indian practice of physical, mental, and spiritual discipline. It aims at the attainment of a state of perfect spiritual insight and tranquility while meditating; but is widely used as a means to attain health and fitness in the modern context. The word yoga means union, and practicing yoga aims to create a union between mind and body. As a yoga instructor, you will lead your students through postures or asanas that will help them improve flexibility, strength and balance in their bodies. You will also guide them through a variety of breathing exercises including pranayama, to help them de-stress and balance their blood pressure, among other things. You will provide hands-on direction to make sure students are performing movements properly and applying the breathing techniques. In addition, you will offer dietary advice , encouraging them to follow a satvik diet. You may work in a class or in a one-on-one setting.

Skills:?Extensive knowledge and experience: You need to have practiced yoga for years before you even apply to qualify as a yoga instructor. You need to be an expert practitioner in yoga, and need to be in great shape yourself.

Interpersonal and communication skills: You need to have a good rapport with your students, and keep in mind their age as well as health issues before you recommend asanas for them. Also, while performing a particular asana, you need to ask students to exercise caution, or push them to do better, depending on the needs and limitations of each student. Ultimately, yoga gurus lead society towards a healthier, more balanced lifestyle that counters the ill-effects of a sedentary and stressful routine.

The resulting backlash is an overreaction(-gate) when we discover that some of the data we presumed to be ours alone was actually being stored, accessed and shared by others...in many cases, "others" being mobile app developers. Video: Catching up with Bethany Lansaw

>> there last year, we met a woman who had a survivor's story to tell. she and her husband had all kinds of plans for the future, but all that changed in that one instant. we went back to see how bethany was doing a year after the tornado bore down on their home.

>> this used to be home.

>> reporter: this is the day a year ago, when bethany 's life was changed forever.

>> this is where the garage was. my bedroom would have been right over here.

>> reporter: joplin and its survivors were in shock when we first arrived thereafter the tornados a year ago. and one of the stories we encountered was that of a young couple, bethany and don, married six years, planning a family. then a massive storm came out of the western sky.

>> i mean, the house was ripping apart. i honestly -- it happened so fast.

>> when the funnel was upon them, bethany instinctively took cover in the bathtub. don who had been a high school football star threw his body over hers to protect her. he covered you?

>> he just has so much love in his heart. and you know people keep saying he wouldn't have wanted it any other way. but if i could have taken twice as much damage just to have him alive, i would have. he got on top of me to take the brunt of most of it and -- he's my hero. he's --

>> while shielding her body, don was hit by debris and died of a puncture wound to the back.

>> i try to remember his smile and the way his eyes lit up when i would walk into the room. he's always in my heart .

>> reporter: by now, lots of people in joplin know the story of don and bethany . it's become part of the collective memory of the disaster.

>> when that tornado hit, it was -- life started over. do i have my down moments? of course. i think anybody would.

>> reporter: bethany has gone back to work, back to school and gotten involved in joplin 's community theater .

>> reporter: and when she needed a place to stay, her best friend insisted that bethany and her dog whisper move in permanently. these days she has more good days than bad, and finds comfort in the fact that even on the worst day of her life, she was loved and protected.

>> if he got to pick a way to go, i don't think he would have chosen another way, because he was that type of person. even though he died a hero like that, he was always a hero to me.

>> bethany was happy to share the news with us, that she will earn her master's degree this summer, opening up yet another chapter in her life.
