Deep space missions? Magnetic shielding of ion beam thruster walls may provide power

Feb. 13, 2013 ? Electric rocket engines known as Hall thrusters, which use a super high-velocity stream of ions to propel a spacecraft in space, have been used successfully onboard many missions for half a century. Erosion of the discharge channels walls, however, has limited their application to the inner solar system. A research team at Caltech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, in Pasadena, Calif., has found a way to effectively control this erosion by shaping the engine's magnetic field in a way that shields the walls from ion bombardment.

Ions are produced in Hall thrusters when electrons from an electric current collide with the propellant atoms to form a plasma in the discharge chamber. Thrust is then generated by the interaction of this current with an applied magnetic field that creates a strong electric field. The magnetic field is mostly perpendicular to the channel walls whereas the electric field is mostly parallel to the walls. This electric field then acts as the driving force on the ions, accelerating them to very high speeds (>45,000 mph) toward the exhaust opening. However, the presence of a plasma in the thruster's discharge chamber leads also to a small component of the electric field parallel to the magnetic field lines. This component then accelerates some ions toward the discharge chamber (rather than the exhaust opening) causing erosion by sputtering material from the walls.

Guided by theory and numerical simulations, the research team designed a thruster configuration in which the effect of the plasma on the magnetic field lines along the walls is minimized, forcing the electric field to be perpendicular to the lines. Based on the numerical predictions, the effect of this magnetic field topology would be to accelerate ions away from walls while also significantly reducing their energy adjacent to the walls. Erosion then would be reduced without degrading propulsive performance. The method now known as magnetic shielding was verified by experiments in a vacuum facility using a modified thruster. The combined results of the simulations and experiments demonstrated that there was 100 to 1,000 times less wall erosion when using magnetic shielding.

The results were published in the American Institute of Physics (AIP) journal Applied Physics Letters.

Asteroid worth $195B, asteroid miners speculate

Asteroid worth $195B: Asteroid miners say that?asteroid 2012 DA14, which will buzz past our planet on Friday could contain a jackpot of valuable metals.

The space rock set to give Earth a historically close shave this Friday (Feb. 15) may be worth nearly $200 billion, prospective asteroid miners say.

The 150-foot-wide (45 meters)?asteroid 2012 DA14?? which will zoom within 17,200 miles (27,000 kilometers) of Earth on Friday, marking the closest approach by such a large space rock that astronomers have ever known about in advance ? may harbor $65 billion of recoverable water and $130 billion in metals, say officials with celestial mining firm Deep Space Industries.

That's just a guess, they stressed, since 2012 DA14's composition is not well known and its size is an estimate based on the?asteroid's brightness.

The company has no plans to go after 2012 DA14; the asteroid's orbit is highly tilted relative to Earth, making it too difficult to chase down. But the space rock's close flyby serves to illustrate the wealth of asteroid resources just waiting to be extracted and used, Deep Space officials said. [Deep Space Industries' Asteroid-Mining Vision in Photos]

"While this week's visitor isn't going the right way for us to harvest it, there will be others that are, and we want to be ready when they arrive," Deep Space chairman Rick Tumlinson said in a statement Tuesday (Feb. 12).

Deep Space Industries wants to use?asteroid resources?to help humanity expand its footprint out into the solar system. The company plans to convert space rock water into rocket fuel, which would be used to top up the tanks of off-Earth satellites and spaceships cheaply and efficiently.

Asteroidal metals such as iron and nickel, for their part, would form the basis of a space-based manufacturing industry that could build spaceships, human habitats and other structures off the planet.

The idea is to dramatically reduce the amount of material that needs to be launched from Earth, since it currently costs at least $10 million to send 1 ton of material to high-Earth orbit, officials said.

"Getting these supplies to serve communications satellites and coming crewed missions to Mars from in-space sources like asteroids is key if we are going to explore and settle space," Tumlinson said.

Deep Space Industries is just one of two asteroid-mining firms that have revealed their existence and intentions in the past 10 months. The other is Planetary Resources, which has financial backing from billionaires such as Google execs Larry Page and Eric Schmidt.

Deep Space aims to launch a phalanx of small, robotic prospecting probes called Fireflies in 2015. Sample-return missions to potential targets would occur shortly thereafter, with space mining operations possibly beginning around 2020.

Planetary Resources also hopes its activities open the solar system up for further and more efficient exploration. The company may launch its first low-cost prospecting space telescopes within the next year or so.

Word of Mouth Marketing Vs Internet Marketing - Web Design ...

I've got to say I feel sorry for business owners who say that they don't market their business because they rely on on word of mouth. Firstly word of mouth marketing IS a form of marketing. Unfortunately even those using that form of marketing do not have a strategy to increase their results.
Invariably these business owners hope the phone rings, they are either super busy and run off their feet or quiet as a mouse, it's rare that their business is consistent.

All big businesses start as small businesses, but no big business totally relies on word of mouth. Before you say "but I don't want to be a big business owner" that's just fine - the fact is if you want to make more and do less work you need more customers paying you more, more often.

It's not uncommon for us to talk to business owners who want to increase their bottom line but feel if they increase their fees they'll turn people away. When it's suggested that more customer enquries will give them more opportunity to increase their fees they say, but if I increase my fees I won't have any customers.

It just doesn't work like that.

If you can afford to loose customers you are in a far better position. Let me put this way. If you got 10 more qualified leads a month and you charged 20% more you can afford to loose 20% of those customers you'd otherwise get, and worst case scenario you'd be doing less work for the same amount of money!

To get your business cranking you have to utilize multiple forms of marketing. Using internet marketing, word of mouth, papers, signage etc You never want your business totally reliant on just one form of marketing because if it slows or stops so does your business and therefore cash flow.

Aside from word of mouth marketing, marketing your Auckland business online is the most affordable option. You've got a 24/7 lead generation machine, if your website is built and designed properly.

Dollar for dollar word of mouth is the cheapest, we all know that, but you're never going to have any stability. If you want stability get a good website, ask for referrals, hand out business cards like lollies, run newspaper ads etc etc

NBA-Warm homecoming for Jeremy Lin at San Francisco Bay

OAKLAND, California: Houston Rockets point guard Jeremy Lin returned to the San Francisco Bay area for a warm welcome and a 116-107 victory over the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday.
Lin had 14 points and 10 assists on the Asian Heritage Night just across the bay from his home town of Palo Alto in his first Oakland appearance since triggering a mass hysteria last year.
The ?Linsanity? may have faded since his knee injury last year and a move from New York Knicks to Houston, but the humble Taiwanese-American was happy to be back in the Bay Area to celebrate Chinese New Year.
The 24-year-old said he could accept all that hype from the media but had different rules for friends and family.
?If anyone calls me any Lin puns,? he said in a post-match interview, ?we?re not going to be friends or family anymore.?
The victory over his former team on Tuesday came a week after the Rockets trounced the Warriors 140-109 in Houston.
Golden State did not miss the opportunity to celebrate Lin?s ethnicity in a region known for its Asian diaspora.
On the Asian Heritage Night, the US national anthem was played by an orchestra of traditional Chinese instruments, and the game was broadcast live in China. Dragons danced at half-time and the cheerleaders wore Asian silk-themed outfits.
Lin seemed to have embraced his role model status as well.
Two weeks ago, after attending a premiere of the donation-funded ?Linsanity? documentary at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah, he met Wat Misaka, the first Asian-American to play in the NBA.
?He?s kind of following in my footsteps and improving on them,? Japanese-American Misaka told the Houston Chronicle. ?I wrote him a note of encouragement when he was with (Golden State) back in the dark days when things didn?t look too good for him. He didn?t have all these fans at that time.
?I think he?s in a lot better place now.?

Food and beverages not likely to make breast-fed babies fussy

Feb. 13, 2013 ? Many new moms fear that eating the wrong foods while breast-feeding will make their baby fussy. However, no sound scientific evidence exists to support claims that certain foods or beverages lead to fussiness in infants, according to Gina Neill, a Loyola University Health System registered dietitian.

"One of the many reasons women stop breast-feeding is because they believe they have to follow restrictive dietary guidelines," Neill said. "However, a nursing mom's food and beverage intake does not have to be as regimented as you might think."

Here are the rules women need to know while breast-feeding their little one:

Monitor your alcohol intake

Your breast milk is comparable to your blood level in terms of alcohol content. If you plan to drink moderately while nursing, breast-feed shortly before you consume alcohol. Having a couple of drinks is not a good reason to resort to formula. And supplementing with formula can cause your milk supply to decrease.

Fish may be the perfect catch, in moderation

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommend that pregnant and breast-feeding women avoid eating shark, swordfish, king mackerel or tilefish. These fish have high levels of mercury. However, don't make the mistake of avoiding fish altogether. Fish that are high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, also can help your baby's brain and eyes develop. Breast-feeding mothers can eat up to 12 ounces a week (two average servings) of fish and shellfish that have lower concentrations of mercury. This includes shrimp, canned light tuna, salmon, pollock and catfish. Albacore (white) tuna has more mercury than canned light tuna and should be limited to 6 ounces (one average meal) per week.

Make no beans about brewing up caffeine

Most breast-feeding women can drink a moderate amount of caffeine without it affecting their infant. The American Academy of Pediatrics defines moderate intake as two to three cups of a caffeinated beverage per day. However, some young infants are sensitive to caffeine and become irritable or have difficulty sleeping even with small amounts of caffeine. An infant's sensitivity to caffeine usually lessens over time.

Spice up your baby's diet

You may have heard that babies can develop gas and become fussy from foods with citrus, garlic, chocolate or ethnic flavors, but fussiness and gas are normal in newborns, so it is unlikely these behaviors are related to your food intake. Even when a baby does react to a food in the mother's diet, the specific food that causes a reaction will vary from baby to baby. A true allergy will usually produce a skin rash or blood in your baby's stool. This usually occurs between two and six weeks of age but may occur earlier. Elimination diets can identify what triggers an allergic reaction. If you think your baby has an allergy, talk to your doctor and a registered dietitian.
