Man City comes from behind to beat Fulham 2-1

Associated Press Sports

updated 12:18 p.m. ET Sept. 29, 2012

LONDON (AP) -Substitute Edin Dzeko grabbed a late winner as Manchester City came from behind to beat Fulham 2-1 and revive its challenge for the Premier League title.

The Bosnia striker slammed a powerful finish into the roof of the net in the 86th minute - moments after coming on - to end a run of two straight draws that had dropped the defending champions off the fierce pace set by early leader Chelsea.

Mladen Petric had put Fulham ahead in the 10th with a disputed penalty after John Arne Riise fell under the challenge of Pablo Zabaleta, but Sergio Aguero's first goal of the season had brought City level just before halftime.

The victory keeps Roberto Mancini's unbeaten team four points behind Chelsea, which won 2-1 at Arsenal earlier Saturday.

Google can't enforce German Microsoft injunction: ruling

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A U.S. appeals court ruled on Friday that Google's Motorola Mobility unit cannot enforce a patent injunction that it obtained against Microsoft Corp in Germany.

The injunction would bar Microsoft from "offering, marketing, using or importing or possessing" in Germany some products including the Xbox 360 and certain Windows software.

The ruling against the German injunction came from the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco.

Representatives for both companies could not immediately be reached for comment.

The current Xbox 360 is the market-leading console in the United States. Microsoft is expected to unveil its next generation Xbox video game console in 2013.

Microsoft has said that Motorola's patents are standard, essential parts of its software and that Motorola is asking far too much in royalties for their use.

Microsoft sued Motorola in the United States in 2010, and Motorola then filed a lawsuit in Germany. In April, a federal judge in Seattle granted Microsoft's request for a temporary restraining order against Motorola in Germany.

In its ruling on Friday, a three-judge 9th Circuit unanimously upheld the lower court order. Since Microsoft had already brought a lawsuit against Motorola for breach of contract in the United States, U.S. courts have the power to put the German injunction on hold, the 9th Circuit said.

"At bottom, this case is a private dispute under Washington state contract law between two U.S. corporations," the court ruled.

European regulators are investigating claims that Motorola over-charged Microsoft and Apple Inc for use of its patents in their products and thereby breached antitrust rules.

North Ireland Protestant march begins peacefully

BELFAST, Northern Ireland (AP) ? A large Protestant march through the heart of Northern Ireland's capital began peacefully on Saturday amid a heavy security presence.

Thousands were participating in one of Belfast's biggest parades in years, and police deployed in force to prevent street clashes between marchers and Northern Ireland's Catholic minority.

Members of the various Protestant "loyal orders," so-called because they're loyal to Great Britain, trooped down Belfast's streets festooned with buttons, tassels, and other ceremonial gear, banging drums and playing music as walked the six-mile (nine-kilometer) route from the capital's City Hall to Stormont, the seat of Northern Ireland's parliament.

Parade-goers carried the orange collarette, a small V-shaped sash worn around the neck. Many also came in the stern-looking dark sunglasses, black bowler caps, and white gloves that have become synonymous with the marches.

At least two women chose a more relaxed uniform: Red-white-and-blue wigs and Union Jack dresses.

The loud and colorful marches date back to the 19th century and are a longstanding irritant between Northern Ireland's two main religious communities. The loyal orders see them as expressions of their culture and a testament to their faith. Many Catholics see them as aggressive and anti-Irish, and the marches can devolve into street fights, particularly when they pass through heavily Catholic area.

There were no immediate reports of any unrest, and marchers passed a potential flashpoint on the parade route ? St. Patrick's church near Belfast's city center ? without incident.

"They marched with dignity down the road," said Father Michael Sheehan, the administrator of St Patrick's. "I think a degree of respect was shown that hasn't been shown before."

Nearly every aspect of the marches ? from the parade route to the music played ? is argued over and litigated by both sides, and a specially-created Parades Commission has been created to mediate between the two. The commission can, for example, re-route a parade around a potential flashpoint or demand that sectarian songs not be sung in certain areas.

The marches are steeped in Northern Ireland's messy history, and Saturday's massive parade, which had been expected to draw up to 30,000 people, is no different. The march was due to finish at Stormont with a cultural festival held to commemorate a 1912 proclamation against plans for home rule in Ireland.

Crowd estimates were not immediately available.

Third Quarter Brings Uptick in Office Leasing, Construction Activity

Commercial real estate fundamentals across Dallas-Fort Worth are improving. That?s the word from Cushman & Wakefield, which has released its preliminary third quarter office market report. With ongoing job growth, the firm expects current trends to continue or improve through the remainder of 2012.

C&W reports that direct and overall absorption, which includes sublease space, totaled 1.8 million square feet and 2 million square feet for the quarter?an improvement of 150.4 percent and 87.4 percent when compared to 2011 figures for the same period.

Office leasing activity (new leases signed) also improved, hitting 10.1 million square feet year to date, up from 9.6 million for the same nine months last year. More than 4 million square feet of that activity came in the second quarter, with significant leases from State Farm, VHA, United HealthCare Group, and Wingspan.

Three submarkets saw more than 1 million square feet in deals during the third quarter: Las Colinas (2.3 million square feet), Far North Dallas (1.2 million square feet), and Far North Central (1 million square feet). Other top performers include Legacy/Frisco (983,000 square feet), Turtle Creek/Uptown (682,000 square feet), and the Dallas CBD (546,000 square feet).

Despite the increase in volume, overall lease rates fell 27 cents to $20.11 per square foot; Average Class A rates came in at $24.47 per square foot.

Market-wide, the cranes have come out again, with construction jumping 300 percent in the third quarter of 2012 compared to the same period last year. Six speculative buildings are under way, totaling about 530,000 square feet, with four build-to-suit projects totaling 510,000 square feet.

Romney Sees Pa. Win Despite Polls, Ad Spend

WAYNE, Pa. - Forget about the polls that show Mitt Romney trailing President Obama in Pennsylvania by more than 10 points, and never mind the fact that the Romney campaign has spent virtually no money in the state. The Republican candidate remains convinced he can still win the state in November.

"I've got a little secret here and that is the Obama campaign thinks that Pennsylvania is in their pocket, they don't need to worry about it," Romney said during a rally at the Valley Forge Military Academy this afternoon.

As the crowd erupted in "boos" and "no ways!" Romney responded, "And you're right, and they're wrong."

"We're going to win Pennsylvania and we're going to take back the White House!" he said.

In his speech today, Romney referred himself as the "president future," discussing military cuts and job losses, tailoring his stump speech to Pennsylvania residents. "Let me note, not coincidentally, that someone has calculated how many jobs will be lost in Pennsylvania if those trillion dollars in cuts go through, it's 39,000 jobs," said Romney, in talking about proposed defense cuts. "We can't afford that. So we recognize the consequence of what the president is doing is severe for the people in Pennsylvania it's severe for the entire nation and in fact, because of the world's demand for American leadership, it's severe for the entire world."

The Obama campaign said in response to Romney's remarks that several of his comments were "false" and that "in next week's debate, facts will matter - and Mitt Romney simply failed to meet the bar of honesty today."

Today was Romney's first visit to the state since July 17, and one that comes on the heels of a fundraiser this morning that required the candidate to be in the state. There is no early voting in Pennsylvania, unlike several of the other swing states that Romney has spent more time in as of late, which gives the Romney campaign more time to make up ground. But earlier this week, a Quinnipiac/CBS News/NY Times poll had Obama leading Romney 54 to 42 and the Romney campaign currently has no ads on the air in the state.

At that morning fundraiser, Romney was optimistic, remarking, "I need you to get more people to vote. Because on Nov. 6, I'm going to win Pennsylvania, and I'm going to become the next president of the United States."

"We need every single vote," he said. "You know we really would shock people if early in the evening of Nov. 6 it looked like Pennsylvania was going to come our way and actually did come our way. That could happen. That could happen."

Romney talks polls, 'character assassination,' and Mass. health law

Mitt Romney took part in three network TV interviews Wednesday night that veered in wildly different directions.

With ABC, Romney addressed polls that show him trailing President Obama, with NBC he promoted the Massachusetts health law that was a model for the national law he has pledged to repeal, and with CBS he accused the Obama administration of "character assassination." Addressing polls, Romney told ABC's David Muir that "Frankly at this early stage, polls go up, polls go down." And he pointed to the first presidential debate - one week from tonight - as a potential turning point in the race.

Read more about that here .

Asked by NBC News how he can "better connect with Americans," he referred to the universal health care law he signed into law as Governor of Massachusetts. Romney has only rarely referred to the Massachusetts law, which Democrats used as a model for the national health reform law - Obamacare - that Romney has pledged to repeal.

"I think throughout this campaign as well, we talked about my record in Massachusetts, don't forget - I got everybody in my state insured," Romney said. "One hundred percent of the kids in our state had health insurance. I don't think there's anything that shows more empathy and care about the people of this country than that kind of record."

Romney also referenced his church, another rarity during the campaign, although members of his Mormon congregation were featured prominently as character witnesses at the Republican National Convention.

"I think people have the chance, who watched our Republican convention, to see the lives that I've had a chance to touch during my life, to understand that as I served as a pastor of a congregation with people of all different backgrounds and economic circumstances that I care very deeply about the American people, people of different socio-economic circumstances," Romney told NBC.

Separately, in an interview with CBS News, Romney suggested the Obama campaign has engaged at times in "character assassination" against him.

He was asked by CBS News' Jan Crawford about conservatives who say he should be more aggressive and whether he will be in the coming month.

"This is a campaign, not about character assassination, even though that's what I think has come from the Obama camp by and large," he said.

"Do you think the Obama camp engaged in character assassination?," asked Greenberg.

"Oh yeah, sure, they try and completely misrepresent my point of view, along with why I'm in this race, but I think fundamentally the American people are interested in who can make their life better," he said. "Who can make people get better jobs and better incomes. And I can. He's proven that he does not have the capability to do that. I do, I've proven that throughout my career. I think that's what it's going to come down to, so I listen to a lot of advice but frankly I'm going to keep on my message, which is I know how to get this economy going, create jobs, more take home pay for the American people."

Differences may play role in the development of asthma in children in different settings

Children living in low-income urban areas appear especially prone to developing asthma, possibly related to infections they acquire early in life. In a new study in The Journal of Infectious Diseases, available online, researchers from the University of Wisconsin in Madison investigated viral respiratory illnesses and their possible role in the development of asthma in urban versus suburban babies. The differences in viral illness patterns they found provide insights that could help guide the development of new asthma treatments in children.

Viral respiratory illnesses have been linked previously to the development of asthma in childhood. Early studies investigated the association of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and the onset of asthma. More recent studies have shown that children with human rhinovirus (HRV) infections have a greater chance of developing asthma by age 6 than children with RSV infections. Additionally, it has been suggested that particular virus strains may be more likely than others to promote asthma development. Because children living in urban inner cities have different environmental exposures than children in suburban areas, the authors of this latest study hypothesized that the types of viral respiratory infections would also be unique to each environment.

To document patterns of respiratory viruses in infants living in urban and suburban locations, James E. Gern, MD, and his team of investigators collected nasal secretions from 500 infants from four inner-city areas in the U.S. (Boston, Baltimore, New York City, and St. Louis) and 285 infants from suburban Madison, Wis. Nasal secretions were sampled during periods when the babies had respiratory illnesses and when they were healthy.

The inner-city infants had lower rates of viral detection overall. This may suggest that other factors, such as bacteria or allergic reactions to pollutions or toxic exposures, contribute significantly to respiratory illness. Sick urban infants had lower rates of two kinds of viruses, HRV and RSV, and higher rates of adenovirus infections, compared to suburban infants. In the urban babies, 4.8 percent of nasal washes tested positive for only adenovirus, while just 0.7 percent of samples from suburban babies were positive for only adenovirus. "Adenovirus infections, either as a single pathogen or when detected in concert with other viruses, were significantly more common in the urban population, and this held true for each of the four urban locations where our study was conducted," the authors wrote.

This is of particular interest, the researchers noted, because adenovirus can cause persistent infections. The study authors believe this may suggest that development of the lungs or airways could be altered by adenovirus infections in early life.

In an accompanying editorial, Peter W. Heymann, MD, and Thomas A.E. Platts-Mills, MD, PhD, of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, noted that the findings are of interest given the pervasiveness and the morbidity and mortality of asthma in poor urban areas. "The results clearly show differences in the detection of viral infections during the first year of life," they wrote, "and this approach is likely to provide novel insights that will serve to guide the development of treatment interventions to decrease the prevalence and severity of asthma during childhood."

In an effort to better understand the origins of non-viral respiratory illnesses, Dr. Gern and colleagues are planning experiments to evaluate other pathogens and microbes in the airways. They also plan to follow the urban children in this study for at least 10 years to "test the hypothesis that infections with adenoviruses might be associated later on in childhood with an increased rate of asthma and perhaps lower levels of lung function."

Do You Gamble On Your Web Security? | Enterprise Features

by SarahSpiteri on 26/09/12 at 4:35 pm

Could you imagine a world without the Internet? It might be a big leap, but use your imagination to erase it from history for a moment. How would that change the way you do business? Would your organization even be around if the Internet didn?t exist?

Despite the considerable changes that the Internet has brought to business, many companies still insist on gambling with their Web security. There are many perils that lurk out there in the form of hackers, malware and viruses and these can have a hugely detrimental effect on your business. In today?s business world, Web security has become just as important as the Web itself.

So how can you enjoy the benefits the Internet brings, without falling prey to the pitfalls?

Get Proactive Web Security

Every single time an employee downloads a file to your network they put your system at risk. The file might be infected by malware of a virus, which may then require system downtime in order to clean out the infection. That is a very costly exercise.

Good Web security software can control what types of files your users may download, and then scans them with multiple antivirus engines. This ensures you always have excellent protection against possible infection.

Block Phishing Attacks

Sometimes your users are tricked into infecting your network, or lured into disclosing confidential information, such as passwords or banking data. Social engineering has become a major attack vector for those that want to get their hands on your data; and this method is often effective because it camouflages itself under a layer of legitimacy.

The best defense against this is to use a Web security solution that can monitor HTTPS traffic to catch malware and websites that are masquerading as trusted sources. In addition, a good solution should also provide you with access to a database of known malicious sites, automatically blocking access to them.??

Keep Productivity Up

Employee Internet access privileges are just that: a privilege. However, some forget this and waste time on personal browsing and chat. While you may want to allow some personal browsing, bear in mind that some websites, such as streaming media sites like YouTube, can be bandwidth hogs. If employees are continually accessing sites like these, the performance of your network can be severely degraded and productivity will suffer across your organization.

By applying Web security you can effectively monitor bandwidth usage and set user thresholds to enforce a fair use policy. Specific sites, or even categories of websites, can be blocked. A good Web security solution also provides granular Internet access control, allowing you to control Web privileges by employee.

In addition, the best Web security solutions can also rate websites based on their reputation, predicting the security risk involved in accessing such a site. Where are the gay voices in ads for gay marriage?

Four states will vote on gay marriage this November, but gay people speaking for themselves have been?noticeably?absent from the TV ads promoting gay marriage.?

By Patrick Condon,?Associated Press / September 26, 2012

John, (l.), and Kim Canny, Catholic Republicans from Savage, Minn., in a commercial in which they say they oppose a proposed constitutional amendment this November that would ban gay marriage. Some gay activists question an ad strategy that rarely puts actual gay people on camera, saying it contradicts their philosophy of openness and hasn?t worked.

Each of these ads ran recently in states with gay marriage issues on the November ballot. What's missing? Gay people speaking for themselves.

Four states are voting on gay marriage this fall, and gay rights groups are pouring tens of millions of dollars into key TV markets in hopes of breaking a 32-state losing streak on the issue. But even as gay people and same-sex relationships gain acceptance through pop culture staples such as "Modern Family" and "Glee," the idea is still seen as dicey by media strategists involved in the ballot campaigns, resulting in ads that usually involve only straight people talking about the issue.

The decision to keep gays in the background has been widely noticed in the gay community and debated on gay-oriented blogs, with some activists complaining that the move contradicts the central message of the gay rights movement for a number of years.

"If we don't show ourselves, people aren't going to get comfortable with who we are," said Wayne Besen, director of Vermont-based gay rights group "Truth Wins Out," one of many that presses gays to live openly with pride in who they are.

But others counsel deference for the complexities of public messaging, pointing out that the ads are designed to speak to the fears and values of the heterosexual majority, whose vote will decide the issue.

"The moderate tough guys we need to flip to win a couple of these races are still the ones who say that gays are gross," said Andy Szekeres, a Denver-based fundraising consultant who has worked on several state campaigns and had access to focus group data. "Pushing people to an uncomfortable place, it's something you can't do in a TV ad," said Szekeres, who is gay.

The definition of marriage is on the ballot this fall in Maine, Maryland, Minnesota and Washington. Beyond those, according to the Human Rights Campaign, 37 states prohibit gay marriage while six and the District of Columbia permit it. Gay activists and their allies are hoping that any wins in November would throw new momentum their way at a time when polls nationwide have shown growing acceptance for gay marriage.

Six of the seven ads broadcast in the contested states this year have featured only straight people talking about the issue. One ad, which played only in Maine, included a firefighter who talked of being accepted by his colleagues. The ads, along with most that ran in the 2008 campaign in California and in other past statewide races, rely on heterosexual family members and friends of gays talking about how the inability to marry has deprived their loved ones of rights and opportunities they should have.

Gay marriage opponents, who also have well-funded campaigns in the four states, plan to begin airing ads soon. In recent interviews, an organizer said the key message is aimed at parents, suggesting legal recognition could result in their kids being told in school and in society that it's OK to be gay.

Pentagon calls for steps to prevent sexual assault

By Jeff Black, NBC News

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has ordered all military branches to review policies and procedures in an effort to curb sexual assaults in basic training and to improve how officers and senior enlisted leaders are educated and respond to reported incidents.

The goal of the latest initiatives, Pentagon press secretary George Little said, is more uniform and comprehensive training across all armed forces.

"It is clear that the department must continue to do more to prevent sexual assault, especially in initial military training environments," Little said. "Our newest service members are the most vulnerable and most likely to experience a sexual assault."

Panetta directives, which come less than six months after the Pentagon revised how sexual assaults are reported, includes an assessment of how new recruits are trained, who trains them and oversight of instructors. In addition, the department intends to improve training for prospective commanders on sexual assault prevention and response.

Related: Air Force relieves training commander at Lackland over sex scandal

Last year, 3,192 sexual assault were reported across all branches of the military, though the Defense Department says the true number of incidents was closer to 19,000 because most sexual assaults go unreported.

The announcement comes after a number of reports on sexual assaults within the military.

Lackland Air Force Base trainers are under investigation for sexual assaults against 31 recruits. NBC's Jim Miklaszewski speaks with one victim from another case who said she was drugged and raped by a recruiter in Maine, but she felt powerless to fight back.

At Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, at least a dozen instructors were accused of sexually assaulting at least 31 recruits and 35 instructors have been removed from their posts during the investigation. The Lackland cases were considered in the latest initiatives, Little said.

?The Invisible War?,?? a documentary film released this summer, unveiled more chilling stories from service members who describe a pattern of assault, intimidation and retaliation, and a failure by the military to hold perpetrators accountable for their crimes. The film is highly critical of the military, and in particular the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office, which oversees Defense Department policy on sexual assaults.

The review of training will also assess the potential benefits of increasing the number of female instructors.

"That review will assess initial training in several areas," Little said, "including the selection, training and oversight of instructors and leaders who directly supervise trainees and officer candidates; the ratio of instructors to students; and the ratio of leaders in the chain of command to instructors." It is to be completed by February 2012.

In April, Panetta ordered that sexual complaints be handled by higher ranked officers -- a colonel or officer of equal rank -- to improve accountability. In the past, a service member?s local unit commander would evaluate charges and decide whether to pursue disciplinary action.?

Service members who report a sexual assault also were given the option to quickly transfer from their unit or installation to get away from an alleged assailant.?

Greg Jacob, policy director for the Service Women's Action Network (SWAN), an advocacy group for women in the military, told NBC News that the latest Pentagon moves are a step in the right direction, but fall short of having unbiased lawyers determine whether sexual assault cases should be prosecuted.

"We're really excited to see the secretary stepping out with leadership, saying 'OK I want to get a snapshot to see what's going in these schools'," Jacob said of the training review. "But as long as commanders are making those decisions you're never going to have completely unbiased dispositions coming out that command -- unless they kick it over to a criminal prosecutor."

Star Walk 6.0 (for iPhone)

I was walking with friends one evening back in May as twilight deepened. I knew Venus would soon be visible, though I wasn't quite sure where to look for it. I took out my iPhone, loaded the Star Walk app, and held the phone up to the sky. As I moved my phone, Venus soon appeared on the sky map the app displayed, and sure enough, I quickly located the planet in the sky.

Star Walk 6.0 (for iPhone) ($2.99 through iTunes store) is a kind of app known as a planetarium program?though it doesn't need a dome or projector, like a planetarium it provides a representation of the night sky showing stars, planets, nebulae, and other celestial objects visible at a given time and date from a location. In a sense the sky itself is Star Walk's dome, as you can hold your iPhone up to the night sky and it will reveal the celestial wonders that lie in the direction you're looking.

Star Walk for the iPhone has one advantage over Star Walk 6.0 (for iPad) ($4.99): phones are more portable than tablets, so you're more likely to have your iPhone with you when you find yourself out under the stars. Otherwise, they're essentially the same app.

When you open Star Walk, you first see a screen called Sky Live, which gives you information on the Sun, Moon, and the planets Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn for the current date (by default, though you can change the date). This data includes rising and setting times and the maximum elevation in degrees for each object. In addition, it gives the Moon's phase and how close to Full (by percentage) it is. (For the latest on the Sun, the dazzling free 3D Sun app for iPad and iPhone is worth getting.)

The Virtual Heavens
When you close Sky Live, a map of the night sky is enabled, revealing constellations (which are labeled), the planets, and our own Milky Way galaxy, shown as a bright band, broken by dark dust clouds, that spans the heavens.? Also marked are the ecliptic (the apparent path that the Sun traces against the constellations over the course of the year as the Earth circles it) and?at the horizon?markers for each of the four cardinal directions. Stars below the horizon are visible, though obscured.

You navigate Star Walk's virtual sky by pinching, stretching, and swiping. You can pan horizontally or vertically by swiping. By stretching, you can zoom in on smaller sections of sky, revealing more stars; many of the brighter ones are labeled with their names. Tapping on any star will reveal its name, even if it's a prosaic designation like HIP 103976, and an information icon. Touching the icon calls up information such as the star's visual magnitude (brightness), altitude and azimuth as well as celestial coordinates, distance, and spectral type. Pinching the screen brings you back to the wider sky view.

In daytime, Star Walk shows the Sun, with the constellations and planets still visible. (In reality, only the Moon and?on occasion?Venus would be easily visible to the unaided eye in daytime.) Day or night, the constellation at the center of your screen is depicted with lines connecting the most important stars, and with an illustration of the mythological or other figure it represents.

?With the Star Spotter function that utilizes the iPhone's digital compass, Star Walk is able to show the constellations visible in the direction you are holding your tablet (more or less). This is true even if your phone is not getting any data reception. What's more, when you tilt your iPhone upwards, by touching the camera icon in the screen's upper right corner the star map will appear translucent and superimposed on the actual night sky as seen with your iPhone's camera. How many stars you actually see largely depends on whether you live under dark rural skies or (like me) in an urban environment where relatively few stars are visible. Even without the translucent view, though, being able to see the constellations on your iPhone's screen in the direction you're pointing it is a great feature (though one that's standard with planetarium apps).

Where Size Should Matter
One flaw is that there's no way to tell a planet's brightness in Star Walk. Stellar brightness is (more or less) depicted by the size of the star's image, and a numerical representation of its brightness (visual magnitude) is also accessible by clicking on the image. Neither is true with planets, though; all the planets are shown at roughly the same size (with Jupiter and Saturn slightly larger than the others, and Pluto?still labeled as a planet, as it is in many astronomy programs?a little smaller), with not even a magnitude figure given. In reality, the planets vary tremendously in apparent brightness, with Venus roughly 25 million times brighter than Pluto, and the brightness of each planet also varies over time depending on where it is in relation to Earth and Sun. Many apps have similar problems with planet brightness; one that does better is GoSkyWatch Planetarium ($3.99, for iPhone and iPad).

?One evening I went to a park to try to see Mercury?as the innermost planet, it's visible infrequently, usually in bright twilight. It would be fairly near the bright stars Castor and Pollux in Gemini, all very low in the west.? I was briefly able to glimpse a single object shining in a gap between trees; I suspect it was Mercury, but it could have been Castor or Pollux, and the app gave no hint as to how bright Mercury should have been that night relative to these and other stars.

The depiction of star brightness is also problematic in Star Walk. Stars may appear the same size even when there's a tenfold or more difference in brightness between them. Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, is one of five bright stars in Canis Major, but it looks no brighter than the other four, even though it outshines each of them by at least 15 times. (Its spikes are longer, but the others appear to glow more, so Sirius actually looks slightly fainter than the others.) Still, Star Walk does a credible job of depicting the constellations despite this issue, and it's a problem the app shares with most consumer-level planetarium programs to a greater or lesser degree. StarMap ($4.99, for iPhone and iPad) is one that does better with brightness.

Ghostly Galaxies
Close-up views also reveal small images of a number of deep-sky objects?galaxies, star clusters, and nebulae. Many well-known objects (from the Messier and NGC catalogues) are shown, as well as some fainter objects that would be difficult to find in a small telescope.? At least one conspicuous object is missing altogether: the Double Cluster in Perseus, a close pair of star clusters that is one of the showpieces of the fall and winter sky.

One caveat is that the image's size and brightness is unrelated to the object's prominence in the night sky. For instance, the Andromeda Galaxy is in the same (mid-zoom) field of view as the spiral galaxy NGC 278, and they look equally conspicuous in Star Walk. In reality, Andromeda appears much larger in our sky, and is about 250 times as bright as NGC 278. The app does give numerical figures for stars' and galaxies' apparent brightness (visual magnitude), though casual skywatchers would not be expected to be familiar with the magnitude scale.

Speaking of the Andromeda Galaxy, mid to high zoom views show it along with two companion galaxies, but there's also ghostlike cloud nearby. Tapping on it did not reveal its identity?it was only when I pinched the image that I realized that it was a larger version of the same Andromeda Galaxy so it can be made out in wide-field views. The Pleiades star cluster is treated in the same way, as is the Small Magellanic Cloud, one of the Milky Way's two main companion galaxies. The other, the Large Magellanic Cloud is shown but not identified.

Tweeting the Sky
When you touch the "Send to" icon at the screen's upper left, you can send a screenshot to email or post it to Twitter or Facebook, save it to your camera roll, or print it out. You can also rate the app, or gift it. When I tried sending a screenshot to email, it opened a message in my default email client with the screenshot pasted in place.

Once I had authorized Star Walk to access my Twitter account and enabled tweet location to be shown, I was able to tweet screenshots. When you click the tweet icon, a window with canned text, and links to the screenshot and the app's iTunes page appears. You can edit the text to your choosing. (Before I enabled tweet location, it would automatically tweet the canned text without giving me a chance to edit it.) With Facebook, you get the same link to the screenshot's Web page, and you can enter your own text.

There is other Twitter-related function in Star Walk. Clicking on the Community tab at the screen's lower right corner takes you to a virtual globe. When you zoom in, the world is dotted with little Twitter icons. Touching one will reveal several tweets from people near that location, each with the hashtag #starwalk. You can respond to these tweets or compose your own. Whenever I tried to send a tweet, though, I got a dead-bird icon with the message "Forbidden."

Cosmic Sleuthing, Galleries, and More
In the app's lower right corner is a search button, which lets you look for 5 types of objects?Constellations; Solar System, Deep Space; Stars; and Satellites?listed in drop-down menus. Objects below the horizon are grayed out, though you can still go to them. The Solar System search includes meteor shower radiants as well as Sun, Moon, and planets; for currently active meteor showers, it will show streaks of light emerging from the radiant. For stars, you can select from a list containing stars' proper names or Bayer designation (Greek letter plus constellation name). A nice touch is that some stars orbited by their own planetary systems (exoplanets) are included. (To find out more about these new-found worlds, the Editors' Choice iPad app Journey to the Exoplanets ($4.99) is worth a look.) The app shows some bright satellites, which move across the screen as they orbit the Earth.

The Gallery section of the app takes you to space photos from five sources: Picture of the Day; ESA (the European Space Agency); ESO (the European Southern Observatory; Featured Objects; and MWS (Milky Way Scientists).? They're beautiful and informative, and provide links to where they appear online. (For more stunning images both of celestial objects and our own world, check out the free NASA Visualization Explorer iPad app.)

From Settings, you can change your location, switch to Night Mode (in which the screen is shown in red to preserve the dark adaptation of one's eyes) turn the constellation patterns on and off;? reveal or hide satellites or the spectrum bar; turn sounds or music (ambient space music) on or off; and adjust visual magnitude with a slider. That lets you show fainter stars (such as you would see from a rural location) or only the brighter ones to match the view of urban observers.

I can recommend Star Walk 6.0 (for iPhone) as a planetarium program, particularly for budding skywatchers. Avid amateur astronomers may want to opt for a more full-featured app such as SkySafari 3 Pro ($39.99, for iPhone and iPad). Star Walk shows visually appealing maps of the heavens (in the direction you're pointing your iPhone when Star Spotter is enabled), and has social media integration, image galleries, and more. It's not without flaws: it could do a better job of showing the relative brightness of objects, planets most of all, and Twitter functionality had a few hiccups. But it mostly gets the night sky right. When installed on your iPhone, it's like having the universe in your pocket, and it's well worthy of an Editors' Choice for educational iPhone apps.

UK to extradite radical Muslim cleric to US

(AP) ? Radical Muslim cleric Abu Hamza al-Masri has lost a court appeal to be extradited to the United States to face terrorism charges, including allegedly trying to set up an al-Qaida training camp in rural Oregon, officials said Monday.

The European Court of Human Rights gave its final approval for the cleric's extradition Monday, ending a long-running legal battle. The decision means that al-Masri, considered one of Britain's most notorious extremists, could be deported within weeks.

Al-Masri and four other terrorism suspects in Britain had argued that in the U.S. they could face prison conditions and jail terms that would expose them to "torture or inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment" in breach of the European human rights code.

In April, the Strasbourg, France-based human rights court rejected those claims. Al-Masri and the others lodged an appeal to that ruling, but on Monday the court said the appeal had failed.

"Today the Grand Chamber Panel decided to reject the request," the court said in a statement. It did not give a reason for refusing the appeal.

Britain's Home Office welcomed the decision. "We will work to ensure that the individuals are handed over to the U.S. authorities as quickly as possible," it said.

The suspects, who are accused of crimes such as raising funds for terrorists, could face life sentences in a maximum-security prison.

The U.S. accuses Al-Masri, who is blind in one eye and wears a hook for a hand, of assisting the taking of 16 hostages in Yemen in 1998 and of conspiring to set up a terrorist training camp in Bly, Oregon, between 2000 and 2001.

He is also accused of preaching jihad ? holy war ? in Afghanistan.

The cleric, who is known for his fiery anti-Western and anti-Semitic outbursts, claims he has lost his Egyptian nationality, but Britain considers him an Egyptian citizen. He is currently serving a seven-year prison term in Britain for inciting hatred.
